Harrock Hill Race July 2012

Check video at 8.15 good stunt going over a stile :0]
Back in 2003 I ran 34.22 that would have given me 5th place in Wed's race!
Only managed 17th place this time despite feeling fairly strong so felt slightly disappointed!
RESULTS http://www.ukresults.net/2013/harrock3.html
Not quite hitting the form I was hoping for!
Maybe not enough miles in the winter might be to blame.
Still one race in the series to go, so maybe can redeem myself with a good final run!
Had another good 14 mile run with Stevie yesterday around the hills of Parbold and Harrock .

10th PLACE AT HARROCK HILL, UPDATED!

BATTLE ON THE HILLS
Barry Magee told me I would be a bit 'stupid-silly' to run this race so soon after a half marathon, BUT I really-really wanted to run it, the series of 4 races is one of my summer targets and more importantly 'I really love this race'.
Lining up at the bottom of the quarry rd I was more nervous than ever, Barry's words kept echoing through my mind!
Off we go clambering up the one mile stony gravel path climb, at first I feel a bit sluggish but as I reach half way up I start moving through the pack, team mate Steve Mclean is sitting right on my shoulder [ he gave me a good battle last month] now we hit the steep section, surprisingly I can still see the leaders not far ahead, I take a few more scalps as the climb flattens out.
Next there is a long section of downhill through the fields with a few well placed stiles to brake the rhythm up! I charge past a couple more runners before we come out onto the road, a sharp left then another a 100m later, now up a narrow lane, Steve comes passed me [just as he did last month] as the lane rears up in front of us, out onto the main Parbold hill rd for a brief second before diving through a cutting in the hedge! Down a tricky slope, over a stream and up the bank before coming to a complete stop at a stile! Dam this is the hardest part, just as you clamber over the stile the path steepens to an alarming degree! [ the legs demand a rest but you have to force onwards].
Up and up I climb over the green fields, slowly I claw Steve back, its painfull, and its not pretty but I,m getting closer! Back in the good old days [ 6 years ago I use to hammer this section, turning my legs over faster and faster like a Tour De France climber on the attack! Now I feel more like a over weight sprinter going out the back! Over another stile or two and I'm onto the escalator, a green track that seems to rise on and on into the distant horizon, just before the top I pass Steve and lead him out onto the rd, Half a mile of tarmac follows before the final section up to Harrock hill, I lead Steve but my legs feel leaded and heavy and my body is boiling up from the inside out in the evening heat and sunshine. On to the ruins of the old windmill and then downhill along a narrow tricky rocky path I stumble and let Steve past, over a stile and down a mad decline through a cow field, Steve is gone and so are my legs, one final stile and down a narrow farmers lane, sharp left, a fling downhill then a hairpin bend and the last 100m uphill to the finish. I try to sprint but the legs will not respond so I have to drag my body over the line!
Wow 24 second faster than last month and 10th place too!
We stay for the prize giving, sipping an ice cold beers outside the country pub on a beautiful long summers evening, 'Perfect'.
Richard Shearer, Rob Ashworth and Steve Mcclean won the team event for the club so all in all a pretty good day!

I MOVE INTO SECOND OVERALL IN THE RACE SERIES

Harrock Hill race 3
A sudden increase in temperature and humidity came as a bit of a shock to the system after such a cool summer so far!
Just a gentle jog before the start had you dripping in sweat, so waiting at the bottom of the quarry road for the start had me thinking that a nice cool beer siting outside a pub relaxing might be a better idea than subjecting myself to running over 3 very tough climbs on such a oppressively humid night.
Anyway after the start all thoughts were put to one side as we concentrated on climbing the first climb, I reached the top with Rob Ashworth still in my sights, which had me thinking I was going alright. Once on the downhill i found myself in a group of 3, I took back one place here then another after the parbold climb ,just before reaching the old ruins of the windmill, but then on the final downhill 3 guys came flying past me as my legs bluntly refused to turn any faster, this dropped me down to 11th place at the finish, 44 secs slower than last month and feeling very tired and drained! It took me a good 5 mins before I started to recover from my efforts and I just had to slump down on the grass and let my body cool down!
Once again I managed to win my age group, 3x in a row, but more importantly I have moved up to 2nd overall in the whole race series! Marathon winning legend Rob Ashworth had a great run just missing 5th place by seconds with 35.14

Our 3rd counter was Andy Hudson in 41.06 33rd, 6 secs faster than last month, Andy Bowker made the trip over from Blackburn to finish in 51st 43.27. Vicky Harvey like me finding the heat hard going finishing in 71 st place 46.42 1.09 slower but an impressive 7 places higher than last month. Cristine Cutner overcame the humid conditions to run 3 secs faster than the june race finishing in 87th 49.30. Carole James was very pleased that for the first time she managed to run up every hill without walking, no mean feat for sure! she finished in 51.25 93rd.
Next months race on 27th Aug is the last in the series and is part of our clubs Grand Prix , so try and make it down, its very challenging but great fun.

9th AND 1st TEAM AT HARROCK HILL

STAMPEDE AT HARROCK HILL
I
ts always a nervous affair waiting at the bottom of the quarry road to be given the 3,2,1, GO!

No matter how good my warm up, my legs always protest for the first couple of minutes of this uphill start, and it was no different today! Rob Berry, Steve Wilkinson and about 20 other runners shot off in front of me, it wasn't until we hit the steepest section half way up that i could floor the gas pedal to the metal and start passing runners who had set off far to fast.
I crest the top feeling far better than last month and now start the rapid descent to Parbold. Up ahead of me is Amanda crook, who took a flyer up the hill, I pull along side her as we reach the cow field at which point the cows decide to stampede in front of us. It looks like a scene from a wild west film! I have to slow right down as they thunder past at high speed blocking my way to the next stile, the last cow in line hesitates, turns and crashes head first into a steel gate just feet away from me. sending a tremor through the ground! It's amazing what race adrenaline can do for you as the thought of that cow crashing into me never entered my head!
I leave the cow looking dazed and confused with stars in its eyes like a cartoon character behind and focus in on catching the next runner in front of me, I catch him as we ascend the steepest section of parbold hill , over another stile and i take a sideways glance to see maurice green of Liverpool RC hot on my heels. I head on up the section we call the escalator, a narrow never ending path that seems to head high into the heavens above! after ten minutes of very hard climbing we reach a short road section before the final climb over Harrock hill, I push it to the limit now, any faster and I will blow for sure! Out onto the fields and on past the ruins of the old wind mill, the next section is the most dangerous, a narrow rocky path with a barbed wire fence to rip you to shreds should you fall! Rob Berry has a 20 sec lead at this point but loses it all here to eventual winner Charlie Pass [ you can not blame Rob for being a little cautious as he is getting over a ham string pull] . Over the last stile i go,i then plunge downwards over a grassy bank to the road, accelerating away from my adversaries, round a corner and there it is THE FINISH, one final all out effort and i cross the line glancing at my watch to see 35.58 [ 9th and 1st v45] my fastest time in four years, to say i was made up would be a underestimation to say the very least! AWESOME!
Every one had there own story to tell by the end of this epic race, not least Rob Berry who missed winning by just one split second in the final sprint. Steve Wilkinson was once again hot on legend Paul muller's heels with 4th place .Amanda crook complaining of sore muscles after her fantastic penny lane 10k p.b. finished close to the course record with 37.36 23rd [ 1st lady] helping the club win the team award! Mike cunningham was 34th 39.27, just behind was Brian Gow 36th 39.34 lapsed SWAC member Brian was coaxed to the race by Andy Hudson promising him a pint if he finished [ Brian is well known for never turning a free pint down1] Andy finished 49th 41.11.
Angela Delaney looking very lean and fit was a first timer here, not quite knowing what to expect I think she ran a very impressive race to finish in 44.59 72nd, Vicky Harvey getting back to top fitness ran over a minute faster than last month 45.33, Carole James was 10 secs faster than last time 48.19 but Cristine Cutner finished 1 minute slower than in may [knowing christine, maybe she ran a marathon the day before?].
There was so much drama in this race you could write a book about it, hell you could make a full length feature film, make sure your one of the stars in the sequel out in july!
Thanks go out to Danny Dreyer of ChiRunning for showing me there is a better way to run!

AFTER POOR RESULTS SINCE MY MARATHON AT THE END OF APRIL, I KNEW SOMETHING WASN'T QUITE RIGHT , I'VE BEEN FEELING TIRED AND STRUGGLED IN RACES.
I DECIDED TO TAKE A IRON SUPPLEMENT AS I'VE HAD A PROBLEM WITH IRON DEFICIENCY IN THE PAST!
WELL IT SEEMS TO HAVE WORKED, AS I RAN MY FASTEST TIME AT HARROCK HILL IN 4 YEARS!
I FEEL REALLY
MADE UP WITH MY RUN! FANTASTIC!
FULL REPORT TO COME.
IF YOU THINK YOU
MIGHT BE IRON DEFICIENT FIRST CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AND GET A FULL BLOOD TEST.

Harrock hill round one.
Two days of Rain before the harrock hill race did not dampen the enthusiasm of the runners who turned out for the start of the 7 th series of this classic race in fact 14 SWAC members gamely took on the challenge of running up 3 steep climbs including the infamous Parbold hill.
Steve Wilkinson, once again demonstrated his awesome power finishing 4th just seconds behind super vet 50 Paul Muller [past winner]. I was surprised to finish 11th and first v 45, after some very hard training for an up coming half marathon my legs felt less than fresh!
Steve Mclean new to this race did well to finish 20th just ahead of seasoned fell runner Brian Davey
Little Mike cunningham seems to be getting back into good shape, finishing in 39.01
Andy Hudson no stranger to this race told me that he was a more relaxed person these days and just ran to enjoy the scenic views and fresh air! never the less 41.24 is fast cruising in my book!
Alasdair Patrick finshed with 43.09 a new name to me!
Vicky Harvey, surely not a vet 40, I do not believe it! ran a great race with 46.47 Carole James got the better of her hubby Clive this time! close behind were Cristine Cutner and Racheal Thomas, Clive James [ no not that famous fat aussie bloke!] still with the Hutton roof race in his legs broke the 50 min barrier with 49.29.
flying doctor Liza Lincoln enjoyed the challenge and sprinted in just behind tiring Clive.
once again Niz Bowker short on training but full of determination overcame the hills and battled on to finish in 55.28 out sprinting Terry Bolland senior in the process!
All in all an awesome day out! RESULTS
