Torchlight 5k RESULTS and a New 2012 Awakening!
Frozen but not deterred............ As a perfect circular red moon settled low in the sky, twenty-nine glowing participants braved the elements on Wednesday night to take part in the final Torchlit Tip 5k of the winter series.
Not put off by the plummeting thermometer, the still evening and surprisingly good underfoot conditions resulted in some excellent times and indeed several reported personal bests.
In repeat of the previous Torchlit race, Rob McGrath steamed off from the start to retain his title in an impressive 18.08. This multi-national event offered a warm welcome to adopted Glaswegian Mark Ashby, finishing second in conditions which he felt were “mild.”
A fully recharged Sue Cooper took the ladies victory ahead of Vicki Harvey and Rachel Thomas.
With extra safety measures in place we had no fallers giving Dr Tobin and his medical team a welcome night off.
A post race call to the missing Brian Grice thankfully confirmed he was not, as feared, laying torch down on the allotment with limited prospects of overnight survival in sub-zero temperatures!
Thanks to all who attended any of the Torchlit series and subject to favourable support/feedback hope to return towards the end of 2012.
Many thanks, Andrew.
Now over to you Rick...............
Thanks Andy for a great winter event, Fantastic 5k series and all for FREE :0]
The Rubbish 5K will return this summer, check my blog nearer the time for the full summer program of events!
PEACE, RICK

Southport Torchlite 5 K RESULTS An enlightening experience.........
An enlightening experience.........By Andy Hudson
Much improved and indeed almost a tropical evening greeted thirty-four
eager participants and a healthy number of much appreciated helpers at
the Torchlit Tip venue last night.
Seemingly darker than the normal extreme darkness! And the route
marked with new experimental “blue” glowsticks, the runners headed off
across the desolate wasteland no doubt exciting local astronomers with
speculative talk of a shooting star!
A breakaway group soon disappeared headed by a rejuvenated Rob
McGrath, holding off stiff competition to take victory on his debut in
18 minutes 25 seconds.
Back in the midfield there was a faller at Beeches Brook (hope you are
ok Clare!) As the dots of lights became strung out across the winding
undulating pathways, Sue Cooper pulled up with mechanical failure
(Duracell next time Sue!) whilst Rick and his now legendary apparatus
created the feel of a bright summer afternoon at the bridge crossing.
Course photographer, Mr Caton, busied himself with random shots of
passing black cats whilst manning a strategic crossing.
Tracy came home in 20 minutes 38 seconds closely followed by Clare
Constable despite her two broken legs from the earlier unintended
rapid decent to ground level!!
Prizes fell to Paul Talbot, Carol Wright ad Paul Warrington with the
ceremonial throw of the dice sourced from the family Monopoly set!
Is it possible to have a better time in the dark?
Watch out for the FINAL event on the 8th February where forty
participants is a realistic target.
Lingering question; Where was defending champion Ben?.................
ANSWER
from Steve James
Ben is in London organizing the Olympics

Southport Rubbish Torchlight 5K, The Illuminated Runners And The Stone Circle!

THE RUBBISH TORCHLIGHT 5K RESULTS
Conditions at the starting point of the race, up at the top of the stone circle were extreme to say the least!
Freezing Gale force winds made it feel like we were at the top of a high mountain pass.
Nic, Andy hudson's daughter [who kindly took the results] made it clear that If we continued with the planned 10K event my life might not be worth living and I might walk with a limp for the rest of my life:0[
In the interests of all helpers and marshals the event was cut to just a 5K.
Hopefully next summer we can try for a 10K event if better conditions allow :0]
Steve Mclean won the mens race by storming away at the start, demoralizing his rivals from the gun!
Trace Peters fresh from her 10K P.B. the day before did a similar job to win the ladies event!
Thanks to Andy Hudson and everyone who helped and took part and Nic for not breaking my leg!
Look out for Andy Hudson's Torchlite 5K in January 2012
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

EXTREME NIGHT TIME RUNNING!
Racing off road at night is a first for me, i bought a led head touch only the day before, so I'd not even had the chance to try it out.
Running into the park and away from the street lighting I switched on my headlight, switching to full power I was a little disappointed to find the light was not as bright as hoped for, giving off a dull diffused beam!
I'm now looking at upgrading to a much brighter GAMMA head touch as the off road night time bug takes hold!
As I made my way to the start I could make out led lights bobbing up and down around the course.
Anyone not knowing what was happening might have wondered what was going on, maybe a pagon winter festive of lights!
The course was based on my Rubbish 5k which follows 2 laps of gravel trail which twist and turn and rides up and down the short sharp hills of the reclaimed landfill site.
Andy Hudson had persuaded 23 runners to take on the challenge, we lined up at the start which was at top of the hill by the stone circle in nervous anticipation .
Steve [the running man]McLean shot away from the start like a bolting wild horse!
I followed his very bright headlight [he was wearing a very high power custom made head torch] the best I could, my lungs filled with icy cold air which made me struggle for breath!
after 600m we turned left and onto narrow single track, Steve McLean pulles away as young Steve Lewis caught me up on the first steep hill.
I now followed Steve Lewis, the paths were white with frost and snow but pretty grippy!
Next we headed downhill and headed for the wooden bridge.
i struggled to find my way down the drop to the bridge my headlight only giving off a dull beam of light.
Steve flew across the bridge, I worked hard to catch him up then we worked together.
Into the second lap and my legs started to feel better as they warmed up.
I pushed hard now until the bridge where I let young Steve lead the way { i was using and abusing him, letting him lead me through the difficult sections but pushing passed him on the fast parts].
Into the final 1/2 mile I make a break, accelerating away from Steve, up the hill to the finish I feel strong and hold Steve off for second place!
Running in the dark is really exciting, it's like going back to my childhood when I use to play war games with my brothers and friends outside on dark winter nights!
Steve Mclean was first back for the guys and Tracey Peters was first for the girls.
It really was a fantastic event, don't miss the next one!
