Final Torchlit 5k sees another bumper turnout

The torchlit series is fast becoming a “not to be missed” event in the winter months.  A great social gathering with a chance to gauge your current level against friendly rivals.

Again greeted with clear, dry and mild conditions, Rob Mcgrath added to his tally of victories in a time of 18:17 with an in-form Tracey Peters leading the women home in 20:53.

There was yet another healthy turnout of marshall’s to ensure safe passage and despite generator failure (still under warranty!!) all participants were accounted for at the finish line with Jon Singleton and Sarah Mcgrath crossing the line in a photo finish.

Spare a thought for the two non entrants, out for what they thought was a pioneering run across wasteland utilising their head torches, only to be met by 51 similarly clad participants heading in the opposite direction!

Thanks as always to ever present Nic and Neil without whom things would be far more chaotic than they are!

On a final note, it was perhaps appropriate Simon Tobin should take a spot prize.  That large box of sweets may be the only thing that can slow him down……I live in hope!

The bigger and better Torchlit series will return in November 2014, but in the meantime Rick will shortly announce his summer series (no head torches required!)

Santa's Dash at Torchlit 5k

Sixty runners, a healthy array of much appreciated helpers, a clear night and a shed load of Santa hats guaranteed a most enjoyable gathering for the Xmas edition of the Torchlit Tip 5k.

With the odd black stray dog adding to the obvious hazards of darkness, Ben Johnson was prepared for all eventualities to finish in a most impressive 17:38 with Clare Constable the first lady home in 19:54 which we believe is a personal best.

There were many unfamiliar faces, newcomers to the event as well as the dedicated stalwarts all enjoying a great social evening with mementos to take away.

Huge thanks to everyone who took part or helped out in any way and look forward to the January edition which has been provisionally earmarked for Wednesday 22nd January 2014.

Torchlight 5K Wed 11th December 7 pm

Torchlight 5k  -  Wednesday 11^th December  -  7pm start

Seasonal festivities begin early for those participating in the second Torchlight Tip run on 11^th December.

It is hoped the “bumper attendance” of the November gathering will be surpassed, heightened by the added festive features and quality memento to the first 50 finishers. (Not bad for a free event!)

Clear, dry, calm conditions are probably too much to hope for, but don’t be deterred!  This “run at your own peril” and “shout out your number” offering has a great atmosphere and is a spectacle not to be overlooked.

Any non-running helpers would be most welcome, diminishing number of head torches are available to borrow on the night.

Torchlight 5K results 13/11/13

The weather was just about perfect (apart from the intermittent torrential rainfall and chilling wind) as several (well 45) eager undeterred athletes (and Rick!) took to the darkened paths last night for the first Torchlight Tip 5k of the 2013 winter series.

With additional features in place (extra torch and megaphone!) a group of five runners soon opened up a growing gap headed by a startled flying doctor unaccustomed (as most of us are) to this privileged spot. 

With Callum manning the much welcomed bridge floodlight and Mark Ashby directing the new high powered 10 watt LED implement, safe passage for all was assured.

“I’m taking it easy tonight” McGrath took victory in a time of 18:48 leaving a trail of bobbing beams in his wake whilst our resident official time master, Mr Rothwell, ensured general fair play!

Judging by the level of entry this event, regardless of conditions, appears considered a great source of competitive enjoyment or just stupidity to those who simply fail to understand the concept!



Don’t miss the Xmas special on 11th December.  Same time, same place, worse weather!

Torchlight 5K Returns Wed 13th Nov

Torchlight 5k returns! Wednesday 13th November

The change of the clock and the onset of the invariably inclement evenings sees the return of the Torchlight 5k on Wednesday 13th November.

The first in a series of three winter events will be ran over the usual “Dobbies trail” on the reclaimed tip land off Benthams Way.   This testing course has become a popular venue, with the torch series offering an alternative to winter training with the emphasis on a fun social gathering, though certainly not without a competitive edge!
As usual results will be posted online and head torches will be available for loan on the night

Whatever the weather it will be a good night so get yourself down and give it a go!  7pm start Wednesday 13th Novemeber 2013.
