I like the bit about Japenese runners starting off with hiking in the mountains to start building there endurance base, percy Cerutty was saying the same thing in one of his books, he said if a healthy young man could not break 3 hours for the marathon he needed to go back and rebuild there endurance base with long treks in the mountains first before starting out on a serious running training programe!

Yes, that bit was an eye-opener - spending months in Boulder just doing 4 hour hikes each day - no running. Good preparation for their high running mileage. I remember one of the low 2:20 Japanese women saying she ran 1000km per month.
